Unit Conversion Chart

Metric prefixes and the everyday length, mass, volume, area, speed, and temperature conversions, with exact factors marked.

Quick Start

The short version. The details, tips, and FAQ are below.

  1. Find the row for the units you have and the units you want.
  2. Multiply your number by the factor in that row.
  3. For temperature, use the formulas instead of a factor.
  4. Round only your final answer.

A chart to look up a conversion factor and do the math by hand. To convert, multiply by the factor in the row that matches the direction you’re going:

new value=old value×factor\text{new value} = \text{old value} \times \text{factor}

Factors marked exact are defined values; the rest are rounded to six significant figures, which is more than enough for schoolwork.

Temperature

Temperature scales don’t share a zero point, so they need a formula instead of a single factor:

∘C=59(∘F−32)∘F=95 ∘C+32K=∘C+273.15\begin{aligned} {}^\circ\text{C} &= \frac{5}{9}\left({}^\circ\text{F} - 32\right) \\[0.6em] {}^\circ\text{F} &= \frac{9}{5}\,{}^\circ\text{C} + 32 \\[0.6em] \text{K} &= {}^\circ\text{C} + 273.15 \end{aligned}

Water freezes at 0 °C (32 °F) and boils at 100 °C (212 °F) at sea level. Normal body temperature is about 37 °C (98.6 °F).

Exact vs. Rounded Factors

Several conversions are exact by definition: the inch is exactly 2.54 cm, the pound exactly 0.45359237 kg, and the US gallon exactly 3.785411784 L. Their reverses (like meters to feet) are not, because dividing by an exact factor gives a number that never ends, so those are rounded. Keep at least as many significant figures in the factor as in your measurement, and round only your final answer.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which conversion factors are exact?

The ones defined by international agreement: 1 inch = 2.54 cm, 1 foot = 0.3048 m, 1 mile = 1.609344 km, 1 pound = 0.45359237 kg, and 1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L. The chart marks them. Their reverses are rounded.

How many decimal places should I keep?

Keep at least as many significant figures in the factor as your measurement has, do the whole calculation, and round only the final answer. Rounding partway through adds error.

Why is temperature a formula instead of a factor?

Celsius and Fahrenheit put zero in different places, so you have to shift by 32 degrees as well as scale. Kelvin uses the same size degree as Celsius, so converting between them is only a shift of 273.15.

Are US and UK gallons the same?

No. A US gallon is 3.785 L and an imperial (UK) gallon is about 4.546 L. The volume factors on this chart are all US units.
